Can automation replace human judgment in personnel selection?

Advantages, limits and a hybrid model that combines speed with empathy in the selection process.

In a world where efficiency seems to be queen, automation in personnel selection has gained ground. But is it really enough?

According to recent data, 67% of HR decision-makers say that AI saves time in selection processes, and it can reduce hiring time by up to 50%
In addition, a hybrid model —AI plus human judgment— delivers better results, combining efficiency with empathy.

Real opportunity:

A solution like Torre.ai —which automates up to 90% of the selection process— triples hiring speed and cuts costs by 50%. So far, we are truly talking about a universe of opportunities that makes processes more efficient and also substantially reduces costs. But…not everything is automatic:

Unsupervised AI use can reinforce hidden biases. A clear example is what Affinity Bias calls the “like me” bias. AI tends to recreate patterns from historical data. If a company has mostly hired people with a certain profile (gender, university, style), the algorithm will then assume that those traits define ideal candidates. This again favors the “familiar” instead of valuing real diversity.

Another bias that can leave great candidates off the radar is the “résumé gap bias”. Time away from work —for maternity, studies, health— penalizes those who had it. AI rates people with career breaks lower, even though those breaks do not detract from professional quality.

Thus the examples multiply, and without judicious automation, stereotypes and biases we have fought so hard to eradicate may find a new way to take hold.

Automation is not the enemy; it is an opportunity to scale the process with intelligence and humanity. And that is the key: faster processes, without losing what is essential: valuing the people we seek to add.
